Slovenian St. Valentine’s Day

Tomorrow is Gregorjevo, St. Gregory’s Day, which according to folk tradition brings Spring because by the old Julian calendar, his name day (12 March) is the first day of spring. In Slovenia we also see this day as a holiday for lovers, sort of a Slovenian St. Valentine‘s Day.

In Ljubljana we celebrate The Welcoming of Spring by reviving the handicraftsmen’s tradition of launching wooden clogs with burning candles inside them into the waters as a sign of rejoicing at no longer having to work by lights. Nowadays children and adults launch little colourful paper or wooden houses with candles into the Gradaščica – a little stream that enters the Ljubljanica River a brief stroll upstream of the old town centre.

The event will take place today along the Gradaščica River on Eipprova ulica Street from 17.30 – 20.00. It is a very beautiful event to see and/or for taking pictures. Check out web page for more info.
