Slovenia is self-sufficient

Lately there is a lot of talking about food self-sufficiency, and there is something interesting you should know about Slovenia and self-sufficiency…

We don’t produce even a gram of sugar, for example, but we are completely self-sufficient in wine production.

For the season 2011 / 2012 we produced 84,980,000 liters of wine, which is 101% of our consumption. It breaks down into 70% white wine, 27% red wine and the remaining 3% were rosé and sparkling wines.

In other words, out of 52 different sorts of vines cultivated in Slovenia, 37 are white and 15 red.

The statistic shows that the average Slovene drank 39.9 liters of wine in last year.
