Slovene indigenous domestic animal species @ ZOO Ljubljana

By the main entrance to ZOO Ljubljana you’ll see a fenced-in area representing a Slovene farm that focuses on indigenous species of domestic animals from Slovenia.

You enter the working exhibit through a modified “kozolec” (A hay/corn drying rack structure, typical for some parts of Slovenia) with an educational board on the side.

In Slovenia there are 12 indigenous species of domestic animals for farm uses and 5 indigenous dog species. Probably not many Slovenians can name all of them, so this section is very important for educating both us and all the travelers through Slovenia.

.

Indigenous species always have very good adaptation to their environments. The majority of our indigenous domestic animals is accustomed to harsh conditions, like steep slopes, less nutritious food, dry summers, cold winters, etc.
