Hidden gem

There are some neighborhoods in Ljubljana that are special, either for architectural details, cultural reasons or just because they’re beautiful. One of those first mentioned is a hidden gem on Idrijska ulica Street, that is, Idrija (UNESCO-protected town) Street and on Postojnska ulica Street, Postojna (world famous cave) Street in Ljubljana, not far from the city centre.

Here, the silhouette is very distinctive since all these are single family houses with, for Ljubljana, extraordinarily steep-pitch symmetrical roofs. And each has a garden. They were built in the 1920s by the architect Ivan Zupan for the former Housing Cooperative and have preserved the original layout and appearance. Locals today know them by the expression “mavrah,” a type of mushroom.
